Tips for Staying Strong as our Communities Open Up

Tips for Staying Strong as our Communities Open Up

As the days are becoming warmer, it is not too long until June 22nd when Summer officially starts.

With a warm and dry start, a warmer than average summer has been forecast with near-normal rainfall. Along with the lifting of the lockdown restrictions allowing more time in nature and the ability to catch up with loved ones and friends in small groups while respecting social distancing, life has finally started to move in the direction of normal again.

As the daily number of confirmed cases for COVID-19 and related deaths are showing a declining trend, the nation as a whole can start to breathe a little easier. It has been a tough time, and it is not over yet, but things are looking good.

Trends are looking good

So while the trends are looking good, there is a real awareness of how easy other countries have experienced a resurgence as people came out of lockdown.

With people returning to work, more use of public transport (with masks), and schools reopening, the potential for community transmission is higher. Thus the repetitive message from Health Secretary Matt Hancock to stay alert, and if you get a cough, fever or have a change in your ability to taste or smell too, please have a COVID-19 test. The focus is to control the spread of the virus and to save lives.

What can I do now to help me stay strong?

To stay strong as our communities open up is to look after the basics.

Rest – Get adequate sleep

Aim to be in bed by 10 pm and to have 7-9 hours of undisturbed sleep a night. If you are having difficulty going to sleep.

  • If the sleep issue has been longer-term or is related to a time of chronic stress or you are 50 years or older also take Blissful Sleep Basic (MA1778).

Support your Respiratory System

Organic Tulsi (MA7928)

To help nourish and strengthen your respiratory system:

Take one tablet of MA687 Liquorice/Ashwagandha formula prior meals 3 x day, and one tablet of Organic Tulsi (MA7928) 3 times a day after meals.

Tulsi has been used by Ayurveda for a very long time to help strengthen lungs and balance the respiratory system or pranavaha srota. Liquorice and Ashwagandha are traditionally used in Ayurveda to support resistance to disease and the respiratory function .

For additional support also take both Maharishi Amrit Kalash Nectar paste (MA4) or tablets (MA7) and Maharishi Amrit Kalash Ambrosia tablets (MA5). This powerful duo is traditionally used to nourish all the major body systems and support the health of all tissue.

Look after your digestive system

While it is important to favour seasonal, organic or spray-free wholesome food and drink where you can, the key to robust health, according to Ayurveda, lies in restoring and maintaining digestive strength along with healthy microbiology.

Interestingly the gut is responsible for 80% of the body’s immunity, and 95% of the mood support chemicals (neurotransmitters including serotonin) too. One’s mood is most influenced by what happens in the gut.

To help prevent discomfort digesting wheat or dairy due to low digestive acids (low Pitta dosha) or heartburn or indigestion due to excess stomach acid (excess Pitta), your stomach may need support.

  • To help strengthen stomach digestive power, take Digest Plus (MA154) 3 times a day after the main meals.

To strengthen digestion of heavy, high-fat or fried foods without heartburn 30-60 minutes after a meal, or the occasional slow, dry or hard bowel movement then your liver, gallbladder and flow of bile may need support.

If you feel better when taking digestive enzymes or notice energy highs and lows or crave sweets and or carbohydrate food like cake, pastry, pasta, bread, rice or coffee then may benefit from pancreatic support.

  • Also sip Meda Tea every 30 minutes from rising to 8 pm to aid in the healthy metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and to assist in the reduction of sugar cravings.
Family outdoors

Stay well hydrated

Sip water every 30 minutes or so throughout the day.

If you have Vata or Kapha Prakriti (nature) favour warm water, if you have Pitta Prakriti favour room temperature or slightly warm, but avoid ice-cold as it disturbs the digestive system.

Overweight

If you are overweight, now is the time to consider gently addressing this.

To get started three simple but effective recommendations to help are:

Eat only when you are hungry

  • Sip water that has been boiled for 10-20 minutes every 30 minutes. 1-2 sips or ¼-½ cup if thirsty. Keep the boiled water in a thermos flask. Consider adding a Kapha Tea tea bag or Be Trim (Meda) Tea tea bag to the thermos flask.
  • Eat your most substantial meal at lunchtime and a light evening meal by 6 pm. Sip fluids as desired. Avoid eating anything more until after 8 am the next day.
  • Consider taking Be Trim1 (MA4006) for normal appetite, or Be Trim 2 (MA1007) for those with a sharp appetite to help you get started.

Reduce stress

Relax daily with Transcendental Meditation

Stress directly reduces the functioning of your nervous systems, digestive system and immune systems.

Use techniques to help you de-stress and relax daily. Transcendental Meditation is a helpful tool for this and has been well researched. Aim to focus on what you have control over and to let go what you have no control over. Aim to be centred, calm and relaxed as you move about your day.

Finally it is very important to follow the recommendations regarding hygiene and social distancing and to favour happiness. Find reasons to laugh each day, do what you enjoy, be positive (look for the silver linings) and express gratitude as where we put our attention grows stronger in our lives.

Wishing you the joy of increased freedom, safety and robust health today and always.
