Amlaberry is the fruit of the Amalaki tree – called Indian gooseberry in English. Of all the rasayanas – Ayurvedic formulations revered for their rejuvenating influence on the physiology – Amalaki is considered one of the most potent and nourishing. Charaka Samhita, the ancient treatise on Ayurveda, describes it as the best amongst rejuvenating herbs.
Good nutrition requires a balance of the six Ayurvedic tastes – sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent. Amalaki is one of just a few herbs and fruits that contain five of the six – all except salty. Such balanced nutrition means that Amalaki helps balance all three doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. It produces health benefits in the following areas:
- it strengthens the mind, eyes, heart, skin and digestion
- it builds muscles and boosts cellular regeneration
- it promotes a positive nitrogen balance for improved growth of muscle tissue.
A body coolant
Although Amlaberry is good for all doshas and seasons, it is especially effective in summer to cool Pitta dosha. It is an particularly good rasayana for people with Pitta and Vata body types.
A broad-spectrum antioxidant
Amlaberry tablets and other rasayanas that contain the Amalaki fruit such as Amrit Nectar and Ambrosia (all available from Maharishi Ayurveda Products) are effective broad-spectrum antioxidants and free radical scavengers, helping to reduce disease and slow the ageing process. Gram for gram, Amlaberry has 20 times the vitamin C content of an orange.
The Amlaberry used in Maharishi Ayurveda herbal products is prepared according to the Ayurvedic texts, using a 21-step process at a temperature below 90ºF to maintain its potency.
